Malachi 3:16

Practice before the Cross

on October 18, 2011

We all need practice at pretty much anything we do. Especially if we want to succeed and do it well.

The same thing goes for spiritual things I think. That’s the idea behind God testing us isn’t it? I mean He already knows how were going to do/respond ect.. but he tests us anyhow. That’s for our own selves I’m guessing. So we can see what we are really like and whats hidden deep inside of our souls (our minds, wills and emotions). I know my soul often comes out in hard times more often than the spirit. Practice Practice Practice.

A few things have struck me about the wilderness.  I have gone through it a few times, its terrible yet it really does have a tendency to produce the most changes and surrender in my life  in a way very little else can.  It’s where I meet myself and look in that mirror God is holding. Eeek!

But in regards to the Israelites in the wilderness the Lord said this about it: And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no. (Deuteronomy 8:2)

It was a test for them, they needed to go through that in order to be ready and equipped to take over the land God was giving them. Then we see Jesus being lead to the wilderness for His temptations. Just in case… let’s be clear, it was not three times that Jesus was tempted. Technically 4 if you consider the fact that the very question was tempting Him to prove His identity“If you are the Son of God than…”) The bible says 40 days He was tempted. We have the three examples that the Lord wanted to speak to us through, however it was 40 days of temptation. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. (Hebrews 4:15)

Anyhow, even Jesus needed practice! This was the preparation not just for His ministry in general, but for what was to come that day on the cross. Not much could really prepare one for the agony and torment, torture on and on… that He faced. Though spending 40 days with Satan….. that might do something to your faith and what not  – maybe even similar to the loneliness and desertion He felt on the cross in a small small way? I can’t say for sure. But the Father definitely believed Jesus needed the wilderness… so I’m guessing we all need it too!

That time helped to prepare Jesus for the real situation. The wilderness was just a test. He passed. But on the cross it wasnt a test anymore, it was the real deal! He NEEDED to stay true to His call and be sure He didn’t want to prove who He was. Matthew 27:36 And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God. 37And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself.
If Jesus Himself needed some wilderness, a testing for preparation for His work here on earth, than we can be sure we need it even more!

Next time your going through a wilderness, please remember that Jesus DOES understand, and He IS there. We never have to fear that which He paid for/conquered: separation from the Lord. Because He endured the separation for us we are ensured never to be separated again! (Matthew 28:20,                John 14:16)

Praise the Lord for all our learning experiences and Glory to the ONLY Wise God!  (Romans 16:27,         1 Timothy 1:17, Jude 1:25)

Have a Wonderful day!
